MOST ASKED ABOUT BOROUGH ORDINANCES
DOGS:
It is unlawful for owners, keepers, handlers, or other persons responsible for dogs to allow them to defecate on public or other private property; and it is the responsibility of the aforementioned people to remove the fecal matter from the public or private property. Dogs are prohibited on or in all Borough parks and recreation places. Keeping or harboring any dog that creates odors or frequent howling, barking or other noises between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. shall cause the owner to be subject to citation.

CURFEW:
Children under the age of 17 are not permitted on the Borough streets after 11:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. unless accompanied by their parents or guardians.

OUTDOOR FIRES/BURNING
The burning of any trash, lumber, leaves, straw, grass, brush or other combustible materials is not permitted including for food preparation. Food preparation is permitted with use of fuels designated by the fire prevention officer. They are: charcoal, propane gas, domestic gas, and wood in appropriately designed appliances.

BRUSH, GRASS AND WEEDS
All grass, weeds or any vegetation not edible or planted for ornamental purposes must be cut when the growing height meets six inches or creates any unpleasant conditions including the production of pollen. The growth must be cut by property owner or person occupying the property. Cuttings are not permitted to be placed on Borough streets.

TREES
All trees within the Borough shall be trimmed to maintain an 8-foot clearance over sidewalks and a 13 1/2 –foot clearance over public highways or streets unless the Mayor designates a greater clearance. The trimmings shall not be placed on the Borough streets.

SNOW AND ICE REMOVAL
The owner, occupant or tenant of every property fronting upon or alongside any street shall remove all snow and ice from the sidewalk within 24 hours after the same ceases. The cleared path on the sidewalks is required to be 30 inches wide. No snow or ice shall be put upon Borough streets.

ABANDONED ARTICLES
Abandoned articles are any items which are inoperable or without current registration plates or certificate of inspection, or are in such a condition which renders them un usable including but not limited to vehicles, trailers, boats, aircrafts, appliances and household furnishings. Permits for repair and restoration of vehicles are obtained through the Police Department.

GARBAGE AND REFUSE COLLECTION
The Borough of Myerstown does not provide garbage and refuse service. Individual property owners and tenants contract with companies to collect such materials throughout the Borough. Refuse containers must be made of a watertight, rust-resistant, rigid material with a watertight cover and side handles. Refuse containers shall not exceed the capacity of 32 gallons or be less than 10 gallons.

SNOW PLOWING & SNOW EMERGENCIES
The Borough of Myerstown practices an intense snow plowing program. The program is designed to place the snow on the street as close as possible to the curb. At times this inconveniences the property owner; however, it does provide the maximum opportunity for emergency vehicles (police, fire, and ambulance) to have clear passage on the streets. Due to the varying widths of the Borough’s streets, it takes as many as four passes in each direction to do an adequate job. Please have patience with our Public Works Department during snow plowing exercises.
Snow Emergencies will be declared when needed. The declaration will be placed on television and radio. Residents shall remove their vehicles from the snow emergency routes or they will be towed at the owner’s expense. Discontinuance of the emergency will be announced on television and radio.
